The Egyptian pound since July: what your money buys.
How many pounds ten currencies bought, kept day by day since late July. One move, seen through ten windows.
From the first week (from 26 July 2026) to the last (to 7 November 2026), one US dollar went from EGP 51.11 to EGP 55.37: +8.3%. Put the other way, the pound lost 7.7% of its dollar value. 100 dollars bought EGP 5,111 then and EGP 5,537 now.
The Saudi riyal, the UAE dirham and the Qatari riyal moved by the same amount (+8.3% each). Their price in dollars varied by at most 0.8% over these weeks, because they are held to the dollar, so for a visitor from the Gulf it is the same move, not a second one.
The others differ by their own move against the dollar: the Chinese yuan +9.7%; the Canadian dollar +8.8%; sterling +8.6%; the Kuwaiti dinar +8.2%; the euro +6.1%; the Turkish lira +3.0%.
It was not one-way. In the week to 15 August 2026 the dollar bought 2.0% fewer pounds than in the first week (EGP 50.06): the pound strengthened before it fell.
The largest weekly move came in the week to 31 October 2026: every currency moved +2.3% to +3.4% against the pound in the same week, so that was a move of the pound itself.
How prices in pounds moved over the same weeks: Egypt’s food prices, measured since July.
Source: ExchangeRate-API market reference rates, kept daily by EgyBI since July. These are not the Central Bank of Egypt’s official fixing, and banks and exchange offices quote their own buying and selling rates. Each currency is compared by the median of its rates in the first week and in the last week of the window.
